Enjoyment + Technique

Do you love singing? Does it bring you joy? Do you feel free? It’s one of the purest of reasons to sing, beyond any goals or bucket list ideas.

There is a great benefit in simply enjoying & not overthinking while you’re singing. I teach this to my vocal students all the time. However, as I evolve as a vocalist and performer, there is real benefit and reward in both enjoying myself and being intentional about technique.

Two scenarios:

👉 A singer gets so caught up in trying to do perfect singing technique that it sucks out all the joy. Everything bows down to ‘getting it right’.

👉 Another may feel a rush of joy when singing, but find that their voice doesn’t sustain over long periods or feel as good as it used to.

You can be a good singer without technical knowledge for sure. Some people start their journey with some healthy techniques already in place.

But for most people, singing becomes easier when they learn principles that provide a solid foundation. Technique creates a safe and sustainable environment for the voice to thrive in.

When you work on technique, you’re also free to be intentional about other things- the emotion behind the lyrics, the expression on your face and through your body. This is when the energy you bring goes beyond yourself and to others!

It’s a beautifully balanced (not perfect- more on that another time!) space where you honour both the work behind the scenes and connecting to the emotion in the moment.

Where do you sit on the enjoyment / technique scale?

Do you feel like you are familiar with vocal techniques, but don’t experience as much joy as you’d like while singing?

Do you love the experience of singing, but feel like your voice has some very noticeable limitations that frustrate you?

Do feel like you have a good balance between feeling free and having good technique to enable you to sing for a long time?

Which one feels like you the most? Reply and let me know!
